This phrase is a personal motivational phrase that I have been saying to myself for years any time the going gets tough. When I start to feel like I can't hack whatever it is that I'm in the middle of and a touch of self pity enters into my mind. In that moment, I immediately say to myself: "soft living makes soft men" to remind me that I don't want the easy path anyway. Because the easy path would inevitably turn me into a person that I wouldn't want to be.

I found myself doing this so often mid-morning (because lets face it, by that time of the day, a whole host of discouraging obstacles can have already entered into our day).

As a result, I finally decided to create a reminder on my phone to make an audible beep and then flash that phrase up on my phone to remind me. I can't tell you how many hundreds of times that this message was right on time for me. It popped up right when I needed it to, and it picked my chin up and it kept me going.

The phrase is certainly true in the physical realm, the mental realm, the emotional realm, and the spiritual realm. Ease creates weakness.

If life gets too easy, we get soft. Without challenges and adversity, we gain no strength. The easier life becomes, the weaker we get. If this goes on long enough, we are eventually so weak that even the most minor challenges become overwhelming to us.

Thus we should welcome the difficult, be overjoyed when challenges come our way, and view all of this as our training to mold us into who we need to be in order to be prepared for whatever future challenges may come our way.

Just as we deliberately train our bodies in the gym using deliberate stress to gain strength for physical adversity, we must receive training for our hearts, minds, and souls for the many vicissitudes of life. Without this training, we are incapable of being the people we need to be for the people who rely on us in the moment that we are needed.
